me, however, that Kirkwood wasthe choice of the Directors, and there was great disappoint-ment among the boys. This was in April, 1849. It ishighly probable, though, that S. S. Posts long connectionwith the Railroad Company, and his popularity, would havesecured him the place; if he had not shown an inclination toanswer, in a non-committal way, queries put to him by the Directors, and a disposition to respond to them by askingquestions himself. Superintendent Kirkwood became knownamong the railroad men as the Silent Man, from a pecu-liarity of his disposition. His office was at 56 Wall Street,New York. Audience with him was easily obtained, and asthe caller entered, the superintendent would look up at hima moment. If the caller did not at once go on to mentionthe business that had brought him there, Kirkwood wouldturn his eyes back to his work without a word. Then thevisitor might stand or sit there all the rest of the day withoutthe Superintendent paying any more attention to him, or

For a long time after the railroad was built, all switching atthe ends of divisions and elsewhere was done with horses. John Bailey was the first station agent at Goshen. Hewas the father-in-law of A. C. Morton, who was the civilengineer of the road for Orange County. The depot atGoshen was built over the track, or rather the track ran intothe depot. When the train came in, the business of therailroad was over for that day. The train and locomotivewere locked in the depot, and the agent kept the kev until itwas time to begin business on the road again next morning,when he would unlock the depot and let the trainmen goin and fire up. Bugler Williams says :— We arrived at Paardeberg drift about 6 a.m. on Sunday. After a hard nightsmarch, firing was heard just in front of where we camped, and we knew that a fightwas on quite clo.se to us. Just as we were becoming interested in a breakfast ofbiscuits and coffee, which the cooks had just placed on the fires, we were ordered toparade. This meant fight, and the idea of breakfast was gladly given up for a chanceto get at the wily one whom we had been marching after for a week or so. We weresoon at the river bank, and after securing our kits tightly around us to prevent themfrom washing away, we started to cross. I was carried o\er on the shoulders ofsome of the bigger fellows. If it had not been for this I shoukl ha\e had to stop atthe river bank, because the water was much deeper than 1 was tall, and the currentwas too strong to think of swimminj.

In South Africa the Native Laws Commission, which comprisedsuch men as Sir Thomas Upington, Sir Thomas Scanlen, and SirJacob Barry, took evidence in a very complete form in the earlyeighties, and as a result reported unanimously in favour of prohibit-ing the sale of intoxicants to the aboriginal natives. Except on the Zambesi,Chobi, and some neighbouring rivers, buffaloes have now becomevery scarce in South Africa ; but between Umtali and the eastcoast at Beira, and also from the latter station to the mouth ofthe Zambesi, they are to be met with in vast herds, and a few AFRICAN BUFFALO 419 years ago existed in countless numbers. Here they are muchprotected by the unhealthy nature of the country, which is deadlyto Europeans, except between the end of May and November.Except a few protected herds in the Addo bush, the Knysna andZitzikamma forests, and thickets of the Fish and Sunday rivers,the species has long since been exterminated in the Cape. TheAnkoli buffalo has been described as B. c. rnddiffei, and ischaracterised by the flattened and less rugged horns ; while thename B. c. nannanni has been given to the buffalo of northernUganda. The Kivu B. c. mathewsi of the Albert Edward Nyanzadistrict is a smaller horned animal, with a white tail-tip, related tothe Sudan race.

uch constant exertiondisturbs them in their nap. They prefer to remain by day in adrowsy yawning state, and, though their eyes are open, theytake little notice of things at a distance. The males utter aloud succession of snorting grunts, which may be heard a mileoff. The canoe in which I was, in passing over a wounded one,elicited a distinct grunting, though the animal lay entirelyunder water. The young, when very little, take their stand on the neck ofthe dam, and the small head, rising above the large, comessoonest to the surface. The dam, knowing the more urgentneed of her calf, comes more frequently to the surface when itis in her care. But in the rivers of Londa, where they aremuch in danger of being shot, even the hippopotamus gains witby experience; for while those in the Zambesi put up theirheads openly to blow, those referred to keep their noses amongwater-plants and breathe so quietly that one would not dream oftheir existence in the river, except by footprints on the banks.

That this membrane really does form in the manner described—that is, secondarily—around heaps of blood corpuscles, I am satisfied—myformer assistant, Dr. Sanderson, having proved it by direct experimentsin my presence. me neighbouring rivers, buffaloes have now becomevery scarce in South Africa ; but between Umtali and the eastcoast at Beira, and also from the latter station to the mouth of AFRICAN BUFFALO 419 the Zambesi, they are to be met with in vast herds, and a fewyears ago existed in countless numbers. Here they are muchprotected by the unhealthy nature of the country, which is deadlyto Europeans, except between the end of May and November.Except a few protected herds in the Addo bush, the Knysna andZitzikamma forests, and thickets of the Fish and Sunday rivers,the species has long since been exterminated in the Cape. TheAnkoli buffalo has been described as B. c. radcliffei, and ischaracterised by the flattened and less rugged horns ; while thename B. c. neumanni has been given to the buffalo of northernUganda, and B. c. athiensis to the B.E. African race. The KivuB. c. mathezvsi of the Albert Edward Nyanza district is a smallerhorned animal, with a white tail-tip, related to the Sudani race.

ith those of the Boers, which action ended in thedefeat and death of Dingaan, and the installation of UmPande as king, under the patronage of the Boers, com-manded by Andreas Pretorius. As soon as the news ofthe death of Dingaan was satisfactorily authenticated,Andreas Pretorius assembled his forces on the banks of theUmfolosi River, and there on the 14th of February, 1840,proclaimed Um Pande paramount chief of the Zulus, Tviththe important reservation, however, for himself and hisfriends, of the sovereignty over the land from the BlackUmfolosi and St. Lucia Bay to the St. Johns River.They also charged Um Pande, for the little servicerendered, a small fee of 36,000 head of cattle, which wasimmediately paid. The Zulu despotism and power were thus broken withinsix years of the first descent of the Dutch Boers into Natal,and, in the main, was unquestionably so broken by thecourage, gallantry, and hardiness of this very remarkablebody of men.
