The African elephant, although still abundant in many regions ofCentral Africa, in the southern part of the continent is rapidlyapproaching extinction. A remarkable exception to this process ofextermination is, however, to be found in the south and east of CapeColony, where, since the year 1830, wild elephants have beensystematically preserved by Government. Strong troops of theseprotected elephants still roam the dense and impenetrable jungles ofthe Addo Bush and the Knysna and Zitzikamma forests. stern Africa. Except on the Zambesi,Chobi, and some neighbouring rivers, buffaloes have now becomevery scarce in South Africa ; but between Umtali and the eastcoast at Beira, and also from the latter station to the mouth ofthe Zambesi, they are to be met with in vast herds, and a few AFRICAN BUFFALO 419 years ago existed in countless numbers. Here they are muchprotected by the unhealthy nature of the country, which is deadlyto Europeans, except between the end of May and November.Except a few protected herds in the Addo bush, the Knysna andZitzikamma forests, and thickets of the Fish and Sunday rivers,the species has long since been exterminated in the Cape. TheAnkoli buffalo has been described as B. c. rnddiffei, and ischaracterised by the flattened and less rugged horns ; while thename B. c. nannanni has been given to the buffalo of northernUganda. The Kivu B. c. mathewsi of the Albert Edward Nyanzadistrict is a smaller horned animal, with a white tail-tip, related tothe Sudan race.
