me neighbouring rivers, buffaloes have now becomevery scarce in South Africa ; but between Umtali and the eastcoast at Beira, and also from the latter station to the mouth of AFRICAN BUFFALO 419 the Zambesi, they are to be met with in vast herds, and a fewyears ago existed in countless numbers. Here they are muchprotected by the unhealthy nature of the country, which is deadlyto Europeans, except between the end of May and November.Except a few protected herds in the Addo bush, the Knysna andZitzikamma forests, and thickets of the Fish and Sunday rivers, the species has long since been exterminated in the Cape. TheAnkoli buffalo has been described as B. c. radcliffei, and ischaracterised by the flattened and less rugged horns ; while thename B. c. neumanni has been given to the buffalo of northernUganda, and B. c. athiensis to the B.E. African race. The KivuB. c. mathezvsi of the Albert Edward Nyanza district is a smallerhorned animal, with a white tail-tip, related to the Sudani race.
