Quick Addo Fact: Addo is home to the biggest dune fields in South Africa – In a lesser-known stretch of Addo, where the park meets the sea, there’s a great gathering of high and wide dunes known as the Alexandria Dune Field. This dune sea, as it’s also known, is the largest and least degraded of its kind in the whole southern hemisphere, stretching over 15 800 hectares, with its widest point being five kilometres from the sea. You can park your car at Woody Cape Backpackers and stroll along for ten minutes on the boardwalk and see the immense dune field from a beautiful viewpoint on the beach. Go and see the dunes when the coral trees are also in flower, from June to October, when they form a red blanket over the tree canopy.

Quick Addo Fact: Two major environmental issues facing the AENP: extinction and overpopulation, which are interrelated. Since the AENP’s original mission was to reintroduce certain mega-herbivores, like the African elephant and black rhinoceros, primary ecological efforts were made to preserve mammalian species. However, by overlooking the other contributors to this environmental chain, certain plant species have been subjected to overgrazing and trampling, mostly by the elephants of the park. This overgrazing and trampling not only destroys much of the plant life, but also forces it to adapt its physiology to stimuli that are not inherent to its evolutionary progress. Some biologists argue that it is not herbivorization alone that is threatening the flora, but a number of other ecological factors including zoochory and nutrient cycling. Up to 77 species of South African endemic plant species have been listed as “vulnerable to elephant browsing.”

The big reason for choosing these lions (as opposed to somewhere like Kruger) is because they are disease-free and will not affect the buffalo population, which might have otherwise caught tuberculosis. The other reason, is that these Kalahari lions are seen to be the closest match to the now-extinct Cape Lion which used to roam the Addo area. If you want to see Sylvester, the famous lion who managed to duck under the fence in the Karoo National Park, then you need to stay at Kuzuko Lodge in the northern Darlington section of Addo. Getaway was also tipped that the park is finishing adequate fencing in this section and it’ll soon be home to the Big Five.

Posts long connectionwith the Railroad Company, and his popularity, would havesecured him the place; if he had not shown an inclination toanswer, in a non-committal way, queries put to him by the Directors, and a disposition to respond to them by askingquestions himself. Superintendent Kirkwood became knownamong the railroad men as the Silent Man, from a pecu-liarity of his disposition. His office was at 56 Wall Street,New York. Audience with him was easily obtained, and asthe caller entered, the superintendent would look up at hima moment. If the caller did not at once go on to mentionthe business that had brought him there, Kirkwood wouldturn his eyes back to his work without a word. For a long time after the railroad was built, all switching atthe ends of divisions and elsewhere was done with horses. John Bailey was the first station agent at Goshen. Hewas the father-in-law of A. C. Morton, who was the civilengineer of the road for Orange County. The depot atGoshen was built over the track, or rather the track ran intothe depot. When the train came in, the business of therailroad was over for that day. The train and locomotivewere locked in the depot, and the agent kept the kev until itwas time to begin business on the road again next morning,when he would unlock the depot and let the trainmen goin and fire up.
