It’s a Celebration for CDC Pupils

Probably the strongest message that I have received from the Coega Maths and Science Programme (MSP) is that failure is just another opportunity to do better next time!

In a nutshell, the MSP – a no-fee CDC CSI Initiative run by Eldon September – accepts pupils who have done well in subjects other than Maths and Science and then gives these pupils a second chance to get a better Grade 12 result by repeating their School-Based Assessment (SBA) and sit for the National Senior Certificate examinations as part-time candidates at the end of the year.

From personal experience in my home I can attest that this approach often does bring exemplary results and a renewed sense of pride and maturity in the pupil. Young John elected to repeat Grade 7 last year and has grown in leaps and bounds as he re-affirmed the core learning required to pass and went from bottom to top.

This morning MSP celebrated their Class of 2025 with a certificate handover and celebrated 4 Distinctions – 3 in Maths and 1 in Science)

2025’s Top Three learners were:

  1. Cassey Barbier: Maths 91%, Sciences 85%
  2. Alizwa Spelmandla: Maths 87%, Sciences 72%
  3. Simengemalenkosi Mgoduka: Maths 82%, Science 74%

For the past four years the programme has produced a 100% pass rate.

The split between male and female for 2025 was 80% Female and 20% Male.

The Coega Maths and Science Programme (MSP) is a flagship Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiative run by the Coega Development Corporation (CDC). It is specifically designed as a “second chance” school for matriculants who wish to improve their Grade 12 results in Mathematics and Physical Science.

Located at the Coega Skills Development Centre in Gqeberha, the program aims to bridge the gap between high school and tertiary education, particularly for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Core Objectives:

Upgrading Results: To help learners improve their marks to meet the entry requirements for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) degrees.

Skills Development: To address the critical shortage of scarce skills in South Africa by feeding more students into technical and engineering fields.

Community Upliftment: By offering the program at no cost, it removes financial barriers for families in the Nelson Mandela Bay area.

The school follows an intensive, full-time curriculum that mirrors the traditional academic year:

Classes typically run from February to October, Monday to Friday (08h00 – 16h00).

The focus is exclusively on Mathematics and Physical Science.

Learners repeat their School-Based Assessment (SBA) and sit for the National Senior Certificate examinations as part-time candidates at the end of the year.

The program is highly regarded for its “catalytic” impact on students’ lives.

The program has recently maintained a 100% pass rate for three consecutive years (2022–2024).

Distinctions:

The Class of 2023 produced 10 distinctions in Mathematics, with several students jumping from failing grades to scores above 70% or 80%. 2024 produced 9 Maths Distinctions and 4 Science Distinctions.

Admission Requirements:

To be eligible for the program, applicants usually need to meet the following criteria:

  • Full Matric Completion: You must have passed all other Grade 12 subjects.
  • Minimum Threshold: Applicants must have scored at least 20% in Mathematics and Physical Science in their previous attempt.
  • Residency: Preference is strongly given to residents of Nelson Mandela Bay.
  • Documents: Requires a statement of matric results and a South African ID copy.

Location & Contact Information:

The program is facilitated at the Coega Human Capital Solutions (HCS) Building:

  • Physical Address: Zone 4, Coega Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Gqeberha.
  • Email: eldon.september@coega.co.za or info.msp@coega.co.za
  • Web Site: https://coega.co.za
  • Application Window: Usually opens in mid-January each year for a limited intake (traditionally around 100 learners).

In South Africa, the reliance on tanked water delivery has significant negative implications for both the environment and public health. As communities depend on plastic containers for this essential resource, the growing accumulation of plastic waste contributes to pollution, harming ecosystems and wildlife.
Moreover, the emissions generated from frequent water delivery trucks exacerbate our carbon footprint, further jeopardizing our environment. This unsustainable practice not only strains our natural resources but also poses health risks associated with untreated water. Instead of continuing on this path, we must advocate for sustainable solutions like Carocell Water Purification Systems.
By investing in effective water purification technologies, we can ensure access to clean, safe drinking water while minimizing plastic waste and reducing harmful emissions.

Why Solar Salespeople Are Compared to Snake Oil Salesman of Old

I think back to the first online adverts that I used to see for renewable energy systems like Solar Panels and wonder if they were the reason for a lot of scepticism.

Those adverts promised free electricity without mentioning the investment needed to generate said free electricity.

Now to the uninitiated the word ‘free’ conjures up easy street life with no worries and no special skills required.

I recall also the start of loadshedding 1.0 in South Africa – the number of quotations that I did every day was simply horrendous. Almost as horrendous as the strike rate of less than 1%.

I tried mightily to increase the strike rate by pre-qualifying client enquiries and warning prospective clients that in order to kick Eskom to touch they would need to spend – in those days – a minimum of R340 000 if they wanted battery storage of 14 kW plus an inverter and solar panels.

But, the desire to get FREE electricity blinded them to the real expenses.

Our country missed a really good opportunity to get rid of loadshedding much sooner if only they had heavily promoted my ‘hippy’ option, and introduced some form of incentive encouraging property owners to install Grid Tie Only – my ‘hippy’ option.

Grid Tie only is not only much cheaper but also shows a far quicker Return on Investment. The equation is simple – produce more than you use on any given day and that will reduce/negate your night time usage.

The ‘hippy’ option was quite straightforward:

  • Install and over panel with Solar Panels only
  • No battery (i.e still subject to loadshedding)
  • Allow your excess production to go to the grid to help support Eskom
If we had a 50 000 households each sending 10 kWh per day into the grid we could have gifted FIVE HUNDRED Megawatts per day to Eskom – not to mention the even larger savings from self consumption.

Eskom produces tens of thousands of megawatts daily, but a precise single number isn’t fixed; it’s a dynamic range, often in the 30,000-40,000 MW band, heavily impacted by plant performance and system constraints, with peaks and troughs daily.

For a solar system with batteries and enough capacity to be called off grid you will be paying around R300 000 today – this for a system at least three times in size of the first battery driven systems.

For most of these large, redundancy focused systems you can expect a return on investment to kick in in year 7 after installation.

The above ROI represents a 23% year on year Compound Annual Growth Rate – numbers that are horrendously impossible to consistently achieve using normal market investments.

Why Snake Oil Salesmen?

  • There is no such thing as a free lunch – even free air and food demands an investment.
  • Our loadshedding turned the purchase of a Solar System into an emotional grudge purchase.
  • Loadshedding drove the demand for a NOW solution rather than an informed solution.
  • Solar Salespeople more often than not promised the world and then delivered a small patch of sand.
  • Due to the pressure many fly by nights entered the industry and failed to understand the long term commitment required to service clients thereafter.

Want to Free Yourself From Municipal Electricity Bills?

AND have a redundant system! Are batteries still viable in this ‘loadshedding lite’ pattern we find ourselves in? I recently wrote an article comparing the average annual percentage increase for electricity in Nelson Mandela Bay and contrasted that with the average annual percentage increases for municipal employees and councillors. • AND have a redundant system!
  • Are batteries still viable in this ‘loadshedding lite’ pattern we find ourselves in?

I recently wrote an article comparing the average annual percentage increase for electricity in Nelson Mandela Bay and contrasted that with the average annual percentage increases for municipal employees and councillors. (Article here: https://mynmb.co.za/how-the-nmbm-contributes-massively-to-nelson-mandela-bays-financial-failure/)

That got me thinking about how we could zero our consumption at home and have a redundant Solar System.

Want to Join me to Free Yourself From Municipal Bills?

I have already taken the first step and prepared my Distribution Board for the installation of a Solar System (See: https://mypr.co.za/a-real-tale-of-the-cobbler-and-his-shoes/)

The second conversation is around monthly consumption – I find myself on the Top Tier and we consume around 1200 kWh’s per month.

I require a certain amount of redundancy so that means installing TWO inverters (and batteries if required).

I need to produce around of 40kwh’s per day.

That would mean around 12kw of PV Panels which is approximately 22 panels.

The redundancy idea also gives the ability to utilise an east, north, west orientation (with four MPPT’s)

A 30 – 40kWh battery bank will carry us through the night and on cloudy days.

The above setup, with two 12kW inverters will produce from 40 – 65kwh’s per day in summer – allowing for top up and self consumption.

My flatlet tenants consume around 450 units of electricity per month – so that will increase my recovery on the upfront investment a bit faster.

There are two suggestions as to equipment:

  1. 2 x Sunsynk 8kW Hybrid Inverters plus 6 x 5.12kWh batteries plus 20 x Tier 1 Solar Panels OR
  2. 2 x 12kw Sigenergy Hybrid Inverters plus 4 x 8.06kWh Sigen Battery Modules plus 22 x 550W Tier 1 Solar Panels

Estimated pricing (Including BoS, Cabling and Labour):

  1. Sunsynk: R237 900 – R283 500.
  2. Sigenergy – R282 000 – R348 000.

As Straton Solar are installers of both models my preference is for the Sigenenergy range.

Should I opt for the highest estimated amount of R348 00 then it will take me 7 years to recover that investment.

BTW – In year 7 the price of electricity (increased by 12% per annum) will be R9.02 per unit.

Next step is to get the Solar Panels up, breathe for a bit and then do the inverter and battery combinations.

We are offering free Featured Press Release publication to any article that fully encapsulate the following guidelines: Journalistic in style, Unique, Topical, Entertaining, Newsy, NOT an ad (or even a sniff of an ad) and to be Published FIRST on MyPR

In essence we are seeking to showcase and heavily promote articles submitted to MyPR that closely follow what Alfred Harmsworth (the Lord of Northcliffe) said about the news:

“News is what somebody somewhere wants to suppress; all the rest is advertising.” ~ Lord Northcliffe

Alfred Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Northcliffe (1865–1922) was a hugely influential British newspaper owner and proprietor of titles such as The Daily Mail and The Daily Mirror. His quote perfectly encapsulates the adversarial and investigative role he believed the press should play in holding power to account, separating genuine news from self-serving public relations material.

If you think that your article falls under the above guidelines then please use THIS form below to submit it. In turn and in addition to our normal promotion, we will also heavily promote DIRECTLY to some of our trusted journalists looking for genuine news. Don’t be fooled into thinking that we are only looking for investigative journalism scoops – unique news comes in many forms.

Suggestions: Sport/Culture Reports from your local school or club, Praise or condemnation for local municipalities, Celebrating a local achievement – you get the drift.

Please Log in to your MyPR Account and then submit at will. We will ONLY publish articles submitted by you as the Logged In user.

  • Black Friday can end in disaster – here’s how to avoid that

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the entire festive shopping season are a golden opportunity for savvy shoppers to grab incredible deals. Unfortunately, they’re also a prime hunting ground for scammers, phishers, and other online miscreants looking to exploit the rush and excitement. As you navigate the digital aisles, staying vigilant is your best defence.

Here’s how to protect yourself and ensure your Black Friday savings don’t become a scammer’s gain.

Be Wary of “Too Good to Be True” Deals

This is the golden rule of online shopping. If a deal seems impossibly good, it probably is. Scammers often dangle unbelievably low prices on high-demand items to lure victims.

Action: If an item is listed significantly below its market value across other retailers, proceed with extreme caution. Research the seller independently.

Scrutinize Emails and SMSes: Phishing is Rampant

During peak shopping seasons, your inbox and phone will be flooded with promotional messages. Phishers mimic legitimate brands to trick you into revealing personal information or clicking malicious links.

Check the Sender: Look closely at the “From” address. It should match the official domain of the company (e.g., support@amazon.com, not amazon-deals@gmail.com). Slight misspellings are a common tactic (amaz0n.com vs amazon.com).

Hover Over Links (Don’t Click!): Before clicking any link, hover your mouse over it (on desktop) or long-press it (on mobile) to see the actual URL. If it doesn’t match the expected website, it’s likely a scam.

Look for Red Flags: Generic greetings (“Dear Customer”), poor grammar, spelling mistakes, and a sense of urgency (“Act now or lose out!”) are classic phishing indicators.

Go Directly to the Source: If an email announces an amazing deal, don’t click the link. Instead, open your browser and type the retailer’s official URL directly (e.g., www.stratlec.co.za) to verify the offer.

Verify Websites: Is it Legitimate or a Look-alike?

Fake websites are designed to steal your payment information or deliver counterfeit goods.

Check the URL: Ensure the website address is correct (e.g., www.woolworths.co.za, not woolworths-store.co). Look for https:// at the beginning, indicating a secure connection (though even scam sites can have this now).

Look for the Padlock Icon: A padlock symbol in the browser’s address bar indicates an SSL certificate, meaning your connection is encrypted. However, this alone doesn’t guarantee the site is legitimate.

Website Quality: Assess the site’s overall quality. Poor design, low-resolution images, broken links, and bad grammar are red flags.

Contact Information: Legitimate sites will have clear contact information (phone number, physical address, email). Test them if unsure.

Use Secure Payment Methods

How you pay can make a big difference in your protection if a scam occurs.

Credit Cards: Credit cards often offer strong fraud protection and chargeback options, allowing you to dispute unauthorized or fraudulent transactions.

Reputable Payment Gateways: Use trusted gateways like PayPal, PayFast, or Peach Payments. Avoid direct bank transfers, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency payments to unknown sellers, as these are almost impossible to reverse.

Avoid Saving Card Details (Unless Highly Trusted): While convenient, saving card details on less-frequented or new websites increases your risk if their security is breached.

Protect Your Personal Information

Be stingy with the information you share online.

Only Provide Necessary Information: Legitimate retailers only need information relevant to your purchase and shipping. Be suspicious if they ask for your ID number, bank account details (beyond payment for the transaction), or other sensitive data unnecessarily.

Strong, Unique Passwords: Use strong, unique passwords for each online shopping account. Consider a password manager.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA): Enable 2FA wherever possible (e.g., for banking apps, email, and major shopping accounts). This adds an extra layer of security.

Create a Long Password for EACH Web Site Account – A Bulletproof method

Suggestion – choose a core set of letters, number and special characters as a BASE for your password, e.g. TwoWords!@#456, then apply a standard set of rules based on the web site that you find yourself on, e.g. Insert web site name after the exclamation mark AND the domain identifier at the end – using this method your password for Fraud Alert will be: TwoWordsFraudAlert!@#456.co.za. And there you have an easy to remember long password that allows you to have a UNIQUE Password for EVERY web site you visit.

In that way you also have an audit trail to see where a password leak occurred.

Be Cautious with Public Wi-Fi

Avoid Sensitive Transactions: Public Wi-Fi networks (coffee shops, malls) are often unsecured, making it easier for criminals to intercept your data. Avoid making purchases or accessing banking details on public Wi-Fi.

Use a VPN: If you must use public Wi-Fi, use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to encrypt your connection.

Monitor Your Bank Statements

Regular Checks: Keep a close eye on your bank and credit card statements during and after the Black Friday period.

Report Suspicious Activity: Report any unauthorized or suspicious transactions to your bank immediately.

Be Skeptical of Social Media Ads

Scammers frequently use social media platforms to promote fake deals.

Research the Seller: Don’t blindly trust an ad because it appears in your feed. Click on the seller’s profile and check for legitimacy (age of account, reviews, follower engagement, professional content).

Look for Reviews: Search for reviews of the company or product outside of the social media platform.

Black Friday offers incredible opportunities, but a little extra caution goes a long way. By being vigilant, skeptical, and following these guidelines, you can enjoy the thrill of securing great deals without falling prey to online scammers. Happy (and safe) shopping!

  • Some Major Vetting took place before specifying Major Tech VETi
  • The electrician and his circuits
  • The path to a highly efficient solar system involves these essential steps

The word cobbler is believed to be derived from the 14th century from the surname and place name “cobelere”, meaning “one who mends shoes”. A shoe mender, shoe repairer, a shoe-maker, one who hand-crafts shoes. In modern day, a cobbler is a master craftsman, an artisan.

The saying, which exists in various forms like “the cobbler’s children have no shoes,” originates from the idea that professionals are often so busy serving others that they neglect their own needs or the needs of those closest to them.

In today’s modern age one thinks that the younger generation have no trust in certain idioms that their parents and grandparents hold sacred.

Sayings to Live by:

  • The Cobbler and his shoes,
  • My Word is my Bond,
  • A Bird in the hand is worth two in the Bush,
  • When Life gives you lemons make Lemonade,
  • All good things come to him who waits,
  • Under promise and overdeliver,
  • The client comes first,
  • Don’t count your Chickens before they are hatched…

But back to THIS Cobbler:

In 1966 our late father, George Weston Straton established Straton & Co. (Pty) Ltd – an electrical contracting firm.

As young boys (our school holiday working careers started at 12 years of age) we were brought up on a diet of all the above sayings along with a hard work ethic and to always put clients needs ahead of our own.

In 1999 I moved into the present home that I occupy. At the time the original wooden distribution board and circuit breakers were deemed ‘adequate’ and passed a Certificate of Compliance.

As the years passed by the distribution board gave good service and I failed to see the need for a new Distribution Board.

Then we started doing Solar installations (for consumers in 2012 after exclusively servicing a large national company since 2005) and I realised that my old distribution board would not be adequate enough to handle a solar installation so relied on a portable backup solution whilst we made sure that we could handle the demand whilst our clients received the best service and time.

Fast forward to 2025 and the need to put up a large home solar installation became pressing so the slow process to find materials and time to replace the distribution board and split it into essential and non-essential circuits.

Yes, if you want maximum benefit out of any Solar Installation you need to undertake a preparatory journey which will include:

  • Record your consumption for at least 12 months *
  • Replace energy hungry appliances and lighting with energy efficient choices
  • Check that your roof will handle the installation – TIP: If your trusses are held together by nails and not nail plates then you could have a problem
  • Make sure that your distribution board can be easily split into essential and non-essential loads – this was my sticking point!

* As an aside – one of Straton Solar‘s first clients, when asked if he had a record of electricity consumption, produced a set of reports all recorded on graph paper beginning in 1966. Frankly – these are the type of clients that we love as we know that they will appreciate the benefit and be able to chart the massive savings.

Stepping up to the plate with some shiny new circuit breakers and boxes was my old mate, Bevan Barkhuizen, from Major Tech VETi. VETi supply products for the home and business such as: Switches & Sockets, Smart Products, Power Towers, Circuit Breakers & Enclosures, Lighting and Connector Blocks. Sorry Bevan – I did warn you that we may take a bit of time to install your Major Tech breakers and boards…

In fact it took us nearly six months to finally get a full day free to deploy three of our electricians on the replacement.

The results were quite sexy and have encouraged me to open the cupboard every now and then and feel just a teensy bit of pride in what Straton Electrical have done in the home that I stay in. AND I hope that our clients feel the same when they see the work that we do in their premises.

Next phase will be to link the inverter and backup battery and install the Solar Panels – don’t hold your breath as I may take a long time if we stay as busy as we have been these last couple of decades.

  • One More Way That Featured Press Releases Stand Out
  • MyPR’s addition of a Table of Contents Boosts Your SEO, AI and GEO Goals
  • ONLY Available to Featured Press Release Subscribers
  • Does a Table of Contents help with SEO and AI Snippets

How Do AI Bots Decide to Cite Your Content?

The current thinking around being noticed and cited by AI Bots is to ensure that they know exactly what your article is about – a no brainer as traditional SEO also demands this.

But, we need to take that thinking up a notch or two by providing a bulleted ‘Table of Contents’ (ToC) or a bulleted ‘Too Long Didn’t Read’ (TLDR) Section within each article.

Here at MyPR we are rolling out such a service (to Featured Press Releases ONLY) that only needs to to take cogniscance of the underlying structure or method of how to do so. i.e. you only have to do ONE thing to enable the ToC’s for your press release.

Does a table of contents help with SEO and AI Snippets:

According to Google AI; “Yes, a table of contents (TOC) helps with SEO and AI snippets by improving user experience and providing clear structure, which can lead to better visibility in search results. By helping users quickly navigate content and allowing search engines to better understand page hierarchy, a TOC can result in increased click-through rates, higher rankings, and a greater chance of appearing in features like AI Overviews or featured snippets.” See also screenshot below.

How Does MyPR Accomplish This?

Simply put, through use of Heading Tags (H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H6).

Your heading tags are a signal to indexing bots (Search Engines, AI etc.) of the decreasing importance of each heading – with H1 being most important and biggest and then cascading down to H6).

As an example – in this article you are reading we encapsulated each heading in Heading tags – H3 is just the right size and bold to trigger the Table of Contents you see above.

The ToC will only be triggered for more than three H tags.

All you need to do to trigger the Table of Contents is to use ONE Header Tag as there are already three H3 headings in each article – Images, Video and Links.

Can I Cascade my Table of Contents?

The short answer is Yes – see below for the importance and above for what happens when you ‘cascade’ your titles.

Header One: An example of cascading tags

The title above is an H1 tag.

Header Two:

The title above is an H2 tag.

Header Three:

The title above is an H3 tag.

Header Four:

The title above is an H4 tag.

Header Five:

The title above is an H5 tag.

Header Six:

The title above is an H6 tag.

How do I ‘choose’ a Header Tag?

If you are using the Rich Text Editor then highlight the title you want as a heading, click on the ‘Paragraph’ setting in the top left corner of the editor and select your Header – Please do not select ALL H1 tags. If your selected titles would normally be BOLD only then please select H3 as the Heading title tag.

If you are using the code editor then I shouldn’t have to explain how at all and you could probably give us all a lesson.

Where will the Table of Contents appear?

At the top of every article submitted from your Featured Press Release submission page.

What Can You Expect?

Suffice to say – a higher probability of being cited in an AI Snippet and appearing on the first index pages of the various search engines.

REMEMBER: The possibility of being cited also heavily depends on the title keywords, subject matter and relevance to the paragraph immediately following your title. In other words don’t use a title that says; “Why MyPR Has Got Your Back” and then talk about the crazy foods you just ate in Outer Mongolia!

How Do You Start Using the ToC?

Just use Heading Tags (H3) where you would have bolded your press releases and make sure that you use at least one title to trigger it (We have three already in place in every release – Images, Video, Links).

I Don’t want to use the Table of Contents

Then simply OMMIT using any Heading Tags in your featured press release.

Can I Close the Table of Contents?

Yes, – click on the menu button to the right of the Table of Contents title. Click again to open.

What Plugin Did MyPR Use?

There are a number of WordPress Plugins available to accomplish a Table of Contents.

We wanted a plugin that was ‘popular’ and used a shortcode.

Easy Table of Contents accomplished this relatively seamlessly for us.

Visit Easy Table of Contents: https://tocwp.com/

In the video below, Stewart Gauld shows you two other methods you could use to install a Table of Contents on your WordPress site.

Gauld emphasises that a Table of Contents section does the following:

  1. Enhances user navigation
  2. Improves SEO
  3. Structures Content

National Bargaining Councils – Should Their Financial Performance Be Readily Available to Members?

What are Bargaining Councils: National Bargaining Councils in South Africa are bodies established through the Labour Relations Act, consisting of employer and employee organizations within a specific industry. What are Bargaining Councils:

National Bargaining Councils in South Africa are bodies established through the Labour Relations Act, consisting of employer and employee organizations within a specific industry. They negotiate collective agreements, resolve labor disputes, and establish various workplace schemes and training programs. These agreements can cover wages, working conditions, benefits, and dispute resolution procedures.

The turnover of national bargaining councils in South Africa varies widely depending on the specific council and industry. Some councils manage significant funds through levies collected from employers and employees, while others may have more modest financial operations.

There are 38 registered Bargaining Councils in South Africa:

  • 21 National Councils
  • 5 Provincial Councils
  • 12 City and Town Councils

Some of the registrations of these date back to 1934. To the financially minded reading this – that means that these Bargaining Councils have benefited from nearly One Hundred years of compound interest on member’s financial contributions.

An up to date number of members of bargaining councils in 2025 is a bit of a crap shoot to determine so we can only go on what we have found online so far. In 2005 a study by UCT showed that a total of 1 091 214 employees were members of bargaining councils.

The research by the UCT DPRU demonstrated that, in the private sector, average wages for employees covered by bargaining council agreements were R2 286, while those for employees outside the bargaining council environment were R3 272. The only group that benefited from bargaining council agreements was Elementary Workers, whose average wages were R1 968 compared to R1 149 for workers outside the bargaining council environment.

In 2012 COSATU estimated that 2.2 Million workers were covered by bargaining councils.

Employer and Employee contributions to these bargaining councils vary and the fees are often on a sliding scale – one of the most quoted figures is R8.50 per employer and R8.50 per employee. Typically Bargaining Council members pay these types of fees: Holiday Fund, Pension/Provident Funds, Funeral benefit and Sick Benefit Fund. Bargaining Council staff also provide advice to employers and employees in the industry regarding a wide spectrum of Labour related issues such as: Retrenchments, Unfair dismissals, Industrial action, Contracts of employment, Training and affirmative action.

Bargaining Council Exco:

Looking at the Bargaining Councils, a number of the Bargaining Councils accredited by CCMA are headed up by Advocates, lawyers and professional persons commanding high salaries.

Now this is where the ‘GREY AREA’ comes in as oftentimes the members of a Bargaining Council have no idea of just how their money is being utilised and, in many cases, whether the Bargaining Council actually is solvent!

The Labour relations Act demands that each Bargaining Council submit it’s annual financial statements to the Department of Labour AND, in the LRA is an example constitution that specifies that Bargaining Councils must keep their members apprised of their financial results.

BUT, it is that 2.2 Million odd members number that got us to thinking that the amount of money collected on a monthly basis by these Bargaining Councils is in the tens of Millions of Rand. Add to that pension funds and other services and the motivation to start one’s own Bargaining Council increases somewhat.

These Bargaining Councils manage Pension Funds on behalf of members and these funds are more often than not in the BILLIONS under management.

As a member of a Bargaining Council I, personally, would feel a great sense of comfort if my council’s financial statements were publicly available AND reflecting a healthy positive balance.

So, we embarked on a massive look at these Bargaining Councils to find Financial Statements, Fees and other relevant information on behalf of employees.

We visited the web sites of each Bargaining Council and, donning our ‘common man’ cap, checked each for a recognisable link to financial statements.

Of the 38 council web sites that we visited we found:

  • 8 Councils with publicly available financial statements
  • Of those an impressive 5 councils are SA Government related

Between the 8 sets of financial statements:

  • The 8 councils reflect a turnover of R885 294 374
  • The 8 councils reflect reflect a surplus of R155 154 208.81

Having recently solved the PHP Upgrade Dilemma for MyPR we are now embarking on a process to develop and install a ‘PHP Appropriate’ WordPress theme to do the lifting in a speedy fashion as possible.

So – we are asking you if you have any suggestions around these aspects for MyPR:

  1. Design
  2. Look and Feel
  3. Functionality

Luckily enough we have a few installations for MyPR’s different focus areas and have chosen THIS one: https://MyPR.co.za/mail/ to use as our GUINEA PIG.

The ask is simple:

  1. Please visit https://MyPR.co.za/mail/ – at present it is as near as dammit for the new theme.
  2. Explore the site and compare it to our MAIN site – https://MyPR.co.za/
  3. Make suggestions as to what you would like to see (or not see) in the new design
  4. Make suggestions as to what functions/menu items etc. will make your life easier when navigating the MAIN site.

PLEASE use this contact form to do so: https://MyPR.co.za/mail/contact

AND the reference to my ‘conservative demeanour?

As one who has had to chose technical equipment to use in our various electrical related divisions I have always been one to use technology that is proven and has a long track record so please bear that in mind if you have radical new ideas for MyPR.

World Rhino Day 2025: Poaching at 11 Year Low, but Still Threatens Some Populations

CAPE TOWN, 22 September 2025 – New data released in the International Rhino Foundation’s 2025 State of the Rhino report ahead of World Rhino Day on the 22nd indicates that although one rhino was poached every 15 hours in Africa last year, poaching levels are at their lowest in more than a decade. Asian and …

Asian and African rhino populations overall have increased by 430 to 26,700, since the last official count in 2022. Wild Africa emphasises that despite this progress, the poaching crisis remains a serious threat.

Africa is home to the majority of the world’s rhinos, including the “critically endangered” black rhino, a member of Africa’s iconic Big Five, and the “near-threatened” white rhino. Current estimates place the black rhino population at 6,788, and the white rhino at 15,752.

Poaching and the illegal trade in rhino horn remain the greatest threats to their survival, driven by demand from Vietnam and China, socioeconomic factors in Africa, and organised criminal gangs. Rhino horn is used as medicine in Vietnam and China and even for ornamental carvings and trinkets, as well as in traditional Chinese medicine.

In a concerted effort to prevent rhino extinction, African governments and conservation groups have implemented a range of anti-poaching strategies. These include on-the-ground protection initiatives, intelligence-led enforcement, advanced ranger training and integrity testing, and stronger collaboration with local communities. Many initiatives also integrate innovative technologies, such as camera traps, aerial surveillance, and motion sensors, alongside rhino translocation programmes aimed at reducing risk in high-poaching areas. While progress has been gradual, these multi-faceted approaches are beginning to yield results.

Since the onset of the poaching crisis in 2008, over 12,000 rhinos have been illegally killed in Africa, with the highest number recorded in 2015, when 1,349 rhinos were poached. By contrast, 2024 saw ‘merely’ 516 recorded poaching incidents. According to The African and Asian Rhinoceroses – Status, Conservation and Trade report (commissioned by CITES 2025), poaching accounted for just 2.15% of Africa’s total rhino population loss in 2024, the lowest rate in 13 years.

“While rhino poaching in South Africa has declined this year and populations are growing overall, rhinos are still threatened by poaching for their horns. Integrity testing of rangers needs to be applied across the board as it has been proven to be effective and education and demand reduction in Vietnam and China is also important as we seek to rebuild rhino populations,” says Peter Knights OBE, CEO of Wild Africa.

South Africa rhino statistics:

  • South Africa has the largest rhino population according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
  • In 2024, 420 rhinos were poached in South Africa, a 15% decrease from 499 in 2023.
  • This represents 81.4% of all rhino poaching cases in Africa (420 out of 516).
  • From 1 January to 31 March 2025, 103 rhinos were poached in South Africa, averaging 34.3 rhinos per month. 35 fewer than the same period in 2024.
  • On 5 May 2025, Dr. Dion George, Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, announced ongoing efforts to combat rhino poaching.
  • Median rhino populations in South Africa remain below the levels recommended by the IUCN African Rhino Specialist Group, meaning many populations are too small to be reproductively and genetically viable.

While there is hope for rhinos, their plight is far from over. These gains, though significant, remain fragile. Sustained investment in protection, stronger international collaboration, and continued efforts to reduce demand, particularly in consumer countries, are critical to securing the species’ future. On World Rhino Day 2025, Wild Africa urges governments, enforcement agencies, conservation groups, and the public to stay vigilant and maintain their commitment to rhino preservation.

Say no to poaching and the illegal wildlife trade, protect rhino habitats and report wildlife crimes.

  • MyPR Traffis stats from Google for July 2025
  • Here is your compelling reason to use MyPR

We are often asked how many visitors we get to MyPR. We understand the curiosity and need to know as it helps our clients serve their clients better.

These days reach and traffic come from so many diverse sources that we normally recommend to the person asking that they rather use a 3rd party to gauge what reach they can expect for any press releases posted on MyPR.

That said – one needs to remember that reach is not confined to one search engine or social media channel only. MyPR gets traffic from many different search engines, social media and the many sites that republish your content.

So, any numbers that we quote are NEVER the full picture as we are unable to see just how many times press releases are shown on social media, AI snippets and other web sites.

MyPR’s server stats for July 2025 show: 142 181 Unique Visitors, 175 067 visits, 406 678 page views, 72.39 Gigabytes of Bandwidth.

Now lets compare the server stats with Google Search Performance figures for the month of July 2025:

  • Visits to MyPR from Google: 2 250
  • Impressions in Google’s Search Results: 442 000
  • MyPR Pages with first impressions: 3 150
  • Number of Press Releases in the Google index: 30 900

Advice Needed: How Do I Tell AI That It’s Scam Assumptions About My Business Are Wrong?

When is a ‘scam’ actually an AI scam? Should I have sleepless nights over this? Don’t use this search term for your business if you have a weak heart Why did the AI Overview snippet MISS the elephant in the room right below the snippet that read – NO RESULTS for “Straton Prepaid Scam”? After …

  • When is a ‘scam’ actually an AI scam?
  • Should I have sleepless nights over this?
  • Don’t use this search term for your business if you have a weak heart
  • Why did the AI Overview snippet MISS the elephant in the room right below the snippet that read – NO RESULTS for “Straton Prepaid Scam”?

After recently reading a scam advisory from Capitec Bank cautioning online shoppers purchasing goods at lesser known online destinations to be, well, cautious, Capitec gave a number of pointers – one of which I do use a lot: Type the name of the online business into your favourite search engine and append the word ‘scam’ thereafter.

So I did for Straton Prepaid, using the search term “Straton Prepaid Scam” on Google.

e.g.: https://www.google.com/search?q=straton+prepaid+scam

And THIS is where it gets messy:

Google’s AI Overview – which appears at the type of the first page of results so carries a heap of gravitas – says:

The “Straton prepaid scam” is likely a reference to the broader issue of prepaid electricity voucher scams, with Straton being a vendor of prepaid electricity meters [Editor: factually incorrect]. Fraudsters often sell fake prepaid electricity vouchers at discounted rates, promising large savings but delivering nothing, potentially leading to customers losing money and facing power outages. These scams can involve fake vouchers with invalid or used token numbers, or scammers disappearing after receiving payment [Editor: Yes, this does happen].

So, very clever use of vague words renders the AI snippet ‘contestable’ if ever Google is taken to court over this potentially (see what I did there?) reputational and market damaging AI Overview / synopsis.

Let’s be real here – would you do any type of business with Straton Prepaid if you read the above AI Overview pertaining to the search term “Straton Prepaid Scam”?

In this instance the AI Overview is way off base and suffice to say – Straton Prepaid only directly supplies and installs prepaid water and electricity meters. We do not directly vend electricity vouchers at all. That aspect is handled by a national concern to whom we are contracted to. And, on top of the AI conjecture immediately below the AI overview Google notes the following; “No Results found for “Straton Prepaid Scam”

Is AI a Scam for Mistakenly Calling out Straton Prepaid as a Scam?. Photo: Stratlec

BUT, I am now looking for advice as to how we can change the AI Overview to read something more along the lines of this:

Your search for “Straton prepaid scam” has resulted in NO reported incidents of any likely, possible or proven scam by Straton Prepaid or it’s online shop at Stratlec Online.

Granted the above little snippet is the first salvo in correcting this wrong.

The other salvo relates to Google saying that they have No results found for “straton prepaid scam” – so the next salvo will happen on one or two of my other web sites who will have the words “straton prepaid scam” appended to the title of this article.

How can You Right This Wrong?

One way that you could do so is place a featured press release on MyPR as a first step to ‘owning’ those keywords and beginning the process to spank AI into telling the truth. In the old days I got mustard on my tongue if I fibbed – it is nigh impossible to do that to an AI bot that falls off the rails and lies.

Place your comments and/or advice on Stratlec Online here please.

Electricity Disconnections – Your Rights

Most of us have experienced that sinking feeling when we answer the doorbell only to be confronted with the spectacle of a man bearing a clipboard, some rubber gloves, a set of screwdrivers and a pair of pliers.

Often this official from the pit of hell will tell you that he has been sent to check the meter and then when you grant him access he then proceeds to cut your umbilical cord to electricity.

“If you have a tenant on your property who does not settle their electricity account, leaving you with a huge arrears and disconnection then you have a solution – install a Straton Prepaid Electricity Meter just downstream of your credit meter,” says Straton Prepaid.

The NRS 047-1:2022 Guidelines around Electricity Disconnections may also be your saving grace though.

The guidelines around disconnections to electricity supply authorities are as follows:

  1. no disconnections shall be effected until at least 14 days after the due date for payment stipulated on the account;
  2. commercial and industrial customers shall be given at least 24 hours notice of an impending disconnection;
  3. disconnections shall only be carried out up to 2 hours before normal closing time of the payment venue;
  4. disconnections shall not be carried out over weekends, public holidays or Fridays (unless normal payment and reconnection facilities are available on Saturday mornings), or on the day before a public holiday; and
  5. reconnections shall be effected as promptly as possible and no later than the first working day after the account has been settled satisfactorily and the reconnection fee has been paid.

The target average percentage success is at least 95 %.

Each Supply Authority is also encouraged to adhere to NRS 047-2:2001 and report on disconnections.

The National Rationalised Specifications (NRS) Association of South Africa guidelines outline the duties and conduct required of revenue protection personnel to ensure good revenue protection and, at the same time, maintain good customer relations and an acceptable service level.

These standards, developed by the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) and other stakeholders, cover various aspects of electricity supply, including quality of supply, grid interconnection of embedded generation, and high-voltage operating regulations.

Straton Prepaid supply (and install) Single and Three Phase Prepaid Electricity Meters.

The Eastern Cape Motor Group’s vehicles are set to fly around the streets of Gqeberha and trails around Addo as it continues a proud legacy of giving The Herald Cycle Tour ‘wheeels’.

North End Sales Manager Dale Cuthbert, the group’s tour coordinator, said the partnership fell in line with the company’s drive to support local events while allowing it to showcase its cars to the perfect target audience.

With its Ford range providing class-leading on and off-road options, he said the vehicles were well suited to the logistical requirements of 37th edition of The Herald Cycle Tour, which is hosted by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for the second year running.

All in all, the ECMG has pledged 26 vehicles – including the Ranger, Everest and EcoSport – to be used by event organisers and officials for the mountain bike races and road events.

“We will supply the lead vehicle and many support vehicles,” confirmed Cuthbert. “Some well before the event to assist with preparation and logistics and many just prior to and on the day of the events.”

He said their vehicle line-up fits exceptionally well with the adventure and sporting lifestyles of participants.

The Group started its lengthy partnership with the event in 1986 – the very first edition of the race. After a short break, the association was renewed in 2017.

“We are looking to take this well into the future because we appreciate the significance of investing in the region,” said Cuthbert.

“As a largely Eastern Cape-based company, we are very proud and privileged to have the region as our foundation and base.

“It’s important for us to back our colleagues across the board, especially when The Herald Cycle Tour is a world-class event in every respect.”

Exceptional organisation, participants from all walks of life and across a range of ages were elements that made it stand out, according to Cuthbert.

“This premier sporting event showcases our wonderful city and environs so well, it’s always a privilege for us to be involved.”

The mountain bike races – consisting of 80km, 60km, 30km, 5km and 500m options across the age spectrum – take place on February 12 from the Addo Polo Cub.

The road programme at Pollok Beach in Gqeberha follows on February 18 and 19 with the 2km and 500m kids’ events on the Saturday and the 106km and 55km races on the Sunday.

Those who compete in the feature races across both disciplines will qualify for the Ultimate Quest competition.

At the heart of the iconic event is its association with various charitable initiatives such as the Smile Foundation, Reach for a Dream, The Herald Christmas Cheer Fund and Uthando Youth Cycling Academy.

Last year, the organisers also introduced the Helmet Heroes initiative aimed at safer cycling for commuters who live on the race route. The aim is to distribute 100 helmets after the 2023 event.
