The Addo Elephant Park is a diverse wildlife conservation park near Port Elizabeth in South Africa. It is one of the country’s 19 national parks and ranks 3rd in size after the Kruger National Park and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The original section of the park was founded in 1931 in order to provide a sanctuary for the remaining 11 elephants in the area. This proved very successful and the current elephant population is around 600 together with a large number of other animals.

Wie bei einem langsamen Fließband wandern die Zähne von hinten nach vorne und schieben die alten abgenutzten Zähne so weit nach vorne bis sie ausfallen. Sollten keine neuen Zähne mehr nachkommen muss sich das Tier auf sehr weiche Nahrung beschränken, wird allerdings bald verhungern.

It had been quite rainy in the weeks before we visited the park. As a result, the vegetation was green and lush, there were lots of exposed watering holes, and the animals were pretty active. As we pulled up to a watering hole near the road from one direction, a herd of female elephants with their babies approached from the other. They spent quite a bit of time drinking and playing in the water just a few feet from us. The babies were obviously learning how to use their trunks to drink by mimicking their mothers. We were amazingly lucky to see this!
