This was a tourist attraction near the Addo Elephant Reserve, although not affiliated with the sanctuary. The elephants are incredible creatures, so it was somewhat comforting, if not ideal, to see that they seemed to have it pretty good. They were more like shift workers paid in oranges than circus animals. They could roam free on the property most of the day, except when they were rounded up 3-4 times per day to carry foreigners like us around. We were told they came to this park from an elephant refuge in Zimbabwe as adolescents to alleviate overcrowding at the refuge. The guides who controlled and steered the elephants were all Zimbabweans, too. All nice guys. That is apparently the hub of African elephant training. Riding one’s a little bit of a bummer, because they’re so impossibly big and agile and smart that you know they had to go through some stuff to get tamed by people.
