SANParks is investigating an increase in cases of lameness among kudu in the Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape.
The development comes as the province continues to deal with an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), prompting SANParks to notify the State Veterinary Department.

Samples were collected from affected kudu and tested for FMD.
All tests have returned negative, SANParks confirmed.
Despite the negative results, authorities are continuing to investigate what may be causing the unusual increase in lameness.

SANParks said it has also strengthened its biosecurity measures at the park in response to the ongoing FMD outbreak in the Eastern Cape.
Since earlier this month, all vehicles entering Addo Elephant National Park have been required to undergo mandatory spraying.
The measure is intended to reduce the risk of FMD being introduced into the park and to protect its wildlife and ecological integrity.

While FMD testing on the affected kudu has been negative, SANParks said it is taking a precautionary approach while veterinary investigations continue.
Cause of lameness still unknown
The organisation is working with veterinary authorities to establish the underlying cause of the lameness.
“Samples were collected from affected animals for testing, which have since returned as negative for FMD,” SANParks said.
“Investigations into the cause of the lameness are ongoing.”
SANParks said it will continue working closely with the relevant veterinary authorities as the investigation progresses.
For now, the negative FMD results provide some reassurance, but the cause of the kudu’s condition remains under investigation.
