This was a tourist attraction near the Addo Elephant Reserve, although not affiliated with the sanctuary. These elephants roam free on the property most of the time, except when they are rounded up 3-4 times a day to carry foreigners like us around, very similar to trail rides on horses. We were told that as adolescents they were relocated to this park from a refuge in Zimbabwe to alleviate overcrowding. The guides who controlled and steered the elephants were all Zimbabwean, too. Riding one is a crazy experience because they’re so impossibly big, agile, and smart.

Le parc a été largement agrandi depuis ses débuts, pour inclure la Woody Cape Nature Reserve qui s’étend de l’embouchure de la Sundays River jusque Alexandria et une réserve marine, comprenant St. Croix Island et Bird Island, d’importants sancutaires pour des oiseaux et d’autres animaux marins. The Addo Elephant Park is a diverse wildlife conservation park near Port Elizabeth in South Africa. It is one of the country’s 19 national parks and ranks 3rd in size after the Kruger National Park and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The original section of the park was founded in 1931 in order to provide a sanctuary for the remaining 11 elephants in the area. This proved very successful and the current elephant population is around 600 together with a large number of other animals.

Previously, the training was on a GO/NO GO basis, unlike Cadet Basic Training or Cadet Field Training where cadets are graded based on performance. For CLDT, guidance from platoon and company trainers on performance is accepted though final grading authority is left to primary observers. Not only are the platoon leaders graded, but the top three performing platoons were visited by the CLDT command team and the platoon chosen as best will receive the Commandant’s Platoon award during a ceremony June 15. This was a tourist attraction near the Addo Elephant Reserve, although not affiliated with the sanctuary. The elephants are incredible creatures, so it was somewhat comforting, if not ideal, to see that they seemed to have it pretty good. They were more like shift workers paid in oranges than circus animals. They could roam free on the property most of the day, except when they were rounded up 3-4 times per day to carry foreigners like us around. We were told they came to this park from an elephant refuge in Zimbabwe as adolescents to alleviate overcrowding at the refuge. The guides who controlled and steered the elephants were all Zimbabweans, too. All nice guys. That is apparently the hub of African elephant training. Riding one’s a little bit of a bummer, because they’re so impossibly big and agile and smart that you know they had to go through some stuff to get tamed by people.
