Quick Addo Fact: Sylvester the lion lives in Addo – The iconic black-maned lions of the Kalahari were introduced to Addo over ten years ago. The big reason for choosing these lions (as opposed to somewhere like Kruger) is because they are disease-free and will not affect the buffalo population, which might have otherwise caught tuberculosis. The other reason, is that these Kalahari lions are seen to be the closest match to the now-extinct Cape Lion which used to roam the Addo area. If you want to see Sylvester, the famous lion who managed to duck under the fence in the Karoo National Park, then you need to stay at Kuzuko Lodge in the northern Darlington section of Addo. Getaway was also tipped that the park is finishing adequate fencing in this section and it’ll soon be home to the Big Five.

Quick Addo Fact: Addo is a beautiful biodiversity hotspot – Our entire country can be divided into just nine biomes (a unique ecological unit with a characteristic set of plant, animal species and climate) and Addo stretches over five of these biomes, namely the Thicket, Forest, Succulent Karoo, Fynbos and Nama Karoo, and each biome has its own sets of key species. The big goal for the park is now to consolidate the land it has and create a functional ecological unit that stretches from the Karoo all across the mountains, fynbos, forest into the thicket and down across the coastal dune system. This diversity is key to its success. Conservation Manager John Adendorff says, ‘Addo is one of the most profitable parks. There’s nothing that even comes close for its size. It runs at 98% occupancy and there are very few spikes in the year, so it’s just consistent. It’s fully booked all the time and a very difficult place to get into.’

Quick Addo Fact: The penguins in Addo are in trouble – Despite having elephant in the name, Addo Elephant National Park extends right down to the ocean and currently protects some very important islands in Algoa Bay, namely St Croix and Bird Island. African Penguins are more threatened than rhino are at this stage. Because they’re not a key species or a high profile one that people really know about, or care about penguins are on the sidelines. Their numbers have dwindled alarmingly and every ten years or so, their numbers halve and if it goes on at that rate, in the next twenty or thirty years there won’t be penguins around.’ Addo is responsible for the protection of about 50 percent of the total African Penguin population.

Quick Addo Fact: Two major environmental issues facing the AENP: extinction and overpopulation, which are interrelated. Since the AENP’s original mission was to reintroduce certain mega-herbivores, like the African elephant and black rhinoceros, primary ecological efforts were made to preserve mammalian species. However, by overlooking the other contributors to this environmental chain, certain plant species have been subjected to overgrazing and trampling, mostly by the elephants of the park. This overgrazing and trampling not only destroys much of the plant life, but also forces it to adapt its physiology to stimuli that are not inherent to its evolutionary progress. Some biologists argue that it is not herbivorization alone that is threatening the flora, but a number of other ecological factors including zoochory and nutrient cycling. Up to 77 species of South African endemic plant species have been listed as “vulnerable to elephant browsing.”

MyAddo Photo Competition

For the next three months budding photographers have the opportunity to capture special moments within Addo Elephant National Park, one of the top tourist destinations in the Eastern Cape, and stand a chance to win big prizes. Weekend Post and Katz Camera World, together with the SANParks Honorary Rangers: Addo Region, will be giving away …

The aim of the competition is not only to raise awareness about the biodiversity within the Addo Elephant National Park, but also to raise funds for research as well as to upgrade facilities for the benefit of all visitors to this wonderful conservation area.

All you have to do to enter is take a photograph of a nature scene in the Addo Elephant National Park. Photographers must indicate where in the national park the photo was taken.

There are two categories in which to enter: one for serious photographers using SLR cameras and an open category for those with point-and-shoot cameras. Prizes, will be awarded to the top three photographs in each section, and include: a two-night stay for two at Lalibela Game Reserve; a one night stay for two at Pumba Game Reserve and a one night stay for two at the Spekboom Tented Camp in Addo Elephant National Park. Canon has sponsored R10 000 worth of vouchers for each category.

The entry fee is R40 for adults and R20 for scholars and includes an A4 print by Katz. Proceeds will be donated to SANParks Honorary Rangers Addo Region.
