Shamwari Game Reserve: Welcome to Shamwari Game Reserve, the ultimate luxury Big Five African safari adventure and conservation effort coupled with responsible tourism. Shamwari Private Game Reserve is home to Africa’s Big 5, and is malaria free and is situated in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. This reserve has received numerous international awards, including the World’s Leading Conservation Company and Game Reserve for many consecutive years.

Shamwari is about conserving a vanishing way of life and is the realisation of one man’s dream, and the success of many people’s passion. Steeped in pioneer history, and dating back to the time when a multitude of game roamed wild and free, the 25 000 hectare reserve boasts five eco-systems, thus enabling the support of many forms of plant, animal and bird life.

Shamwari is situated in verdant bush along the Bushmans River, halfway between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown, a pleasant drive from Cape Town and forms a natural extension to the famous Garden Route. Luxury accommodation is offered in 7 different lodges at Shamwari Game Reserve, all of which are 5 Star graded. Choose a lodge that perfectly compliments your ideal African experience.

When you visit Shamwari Game Reserve, we would want you to have the ‘safari of a lifetime’. We will assign a personal game ranger to your group of six, your game ranger and lodge manager will design your daily program with you.

We want you to experience, learn and enjoy the very best that African wildlife viewing can offer. To achieve this goal, we have brought together the best that the area has to offer. There is great game viewing, in modern open game viewing vehicles that have been especially converted to maximise comfort and viewing potential. Your personal game ranger will provide insightful and valuable information about the fauna and flora. In between game drives your time is filled with relaxing, reading, spa treatments, swimming, enjoying delicious cuisine, a game walk, or a visit to one of the two Born Free Big Cat Sanctuary’s.

For children on a Safari, this is a truly unique, educational and fun family safari. The colonial-style, Riverdene Lodge with nine inter-leading luxury rooms, rim flow pool, supervised playroom, spacious green lawns and jungle gym facility will ensure entertainment for the whole family.

Upon arrival, the children’s co-ordinator will discuss activity options with the family taking the family’s size, children’s ages and the weather into consideration. Child minding facilities are available at an additional cost for children younger than four years as they are too young to join game drives.

Anonymous, South Africa: Fantastic Fantastic Fantastic! We will be back.

Mike Watson, United Kingdom: The experience was marvellous with the game drives being the focal point of our stay. Our ranger, Darryn, was extremely knowledgeable and was persistent in ensuring we got the best possible chance to view as many of the animals as possible. The accommodation, quality of food and service were excellent. The bedrooms were luxurious. The staff couldn’t do enough for you and were very attentive and efficient without being over elaborate. The food was very well prepared and varied. All in all an unbeatable experience.

philip bennett, United Kingdom: Apart from the two Land Rover breakdowns that we endured on our first game drive! (which the staff handled very well), the experience was fantastic. For someone without much time (we only stayed for one night) you get to see a lot of game in just two game drives, from the pride of lions, wild dogs, elephants, giraffes and antelope. We didn’t get to see buffalo or the elusive Hippo (despite the great effort of our knowledgable and lovely guide). Would recommend the luxury tented camp for an authentic safari experience.

George McCall, South Africa: We enjoyed our stay very much. Good food and great company. We especially liked the ironed sheets!
Susanne Psiuk, South Africa: One of the best accommodation I ever enjoyed in SA; very tasteful interiors, enough space and very clean. Friendly owner. All was perfect! Thank you!
Andy Overbeek, South Africa: Eli, John and Gran are such nice, friendly people that, even if the cottage was a pondokkie, it would have been worth staying there. The cottage was in fact extremely comfortable and the service was excellent! While staying there, it is well worth it to visit the local pub, Louis’, for a drink or two and a delicious steak.

Thank you all and we will be back.

Tamar Briggs, South Africa: Liz gave us a very warm welcome like we were old friends. Our room was spacious, light and fresh and the setting is beautiful, peaceful with a lovely swimming pool that we swam in and relaxed around. Breakfast was like no other we’ve had with an introduction to other guests, greeted with homemade bread by Peter and jams by Liz. Reviews:

Marita Langenhoven, South Africa: The staff of Idwala are very friendly and approachable! The food is very good and feshly prepared! The lodge is built in a valley and had stunning views! The decor is non-pretenscious yet luxurious. We went on for game drives and saw lions three times, cheetah once, white rhino once and elephant twice; not even to talk about all the beautiful buck and many birds!! We celebrated our wedding anniversarry on the 2nd night and the lodge arranged a private dinner for us and when we arrived at our room it was romantically decorated with flowers and sparkling wine! They also gave me a bunch of protea…

prengere thierry, France: We came from France and we heard about Idwala being a nice lodge. We were not deceived. The site is great, the service was perfect, the staff had a great sense of hospitality and professionalism! Worth the voyage!

Sarah Roberts, United Kingdom: Perfect end to our first visit to South Africa. From the moment you arrive you are throughly spoilt, the setting is awe inspiring. The staff are so friendly and the food amazing. I would definitely go back. The rangers were brilliant and so knowledgeable. Worth every penny.

Linzi Kirkham, South Africa: Absolutely the highlight of our travels to SA. We were the only guests there for the evening and got very Spoiled by the staff- who could not have done anything more to have made our stay any more amazing! Just wish we could have stayed longer. Our Ranger and Game drives were out of this world, seeing the ellusive teeny lion cubs was a huuuuge plus. Loved it!The Chef is super! Delicious fresh home made food with a lot of attention to detail.

Grant Ring, South Africa: Everything, from the time that we arrived, until the time that we left was amazing!Really, the staff especially our ranger [Darryl] were fantastic, and went out of their way to make sure that we were happy. The intimacy of the lodge [and the fact that it only accommodates 8] makes it a really personal, enjoyable stay.If you are in doubt, take this review and just do it – book right now – you will not be sorry.

Steven Ray, United States of America: Frank, the ranger, is the best! We stayed in a much more expensive game lodge after Idwala but really enjoyed Idwala much more. The food was excellent, the staff very warm and friendly and those game drives were absolutely one of the top highlights of our trip to South Africa. Could not be happier!

Patrick Rosslee, South Africa: The best holiday. Definitely recommend at least 2 nights.

Mary Williams, United States of America: Idwalla was one of the highlights of our 4 week trip to South Africa. The Lodge was like a movie set and the staff was so accommodating and gracious. What a wonderful experience!

michelle coetzee, South Africa: What a great place to get away from it all. I dont think in all our travels have we ever felt so pampered and well looked. A huge big thank you to Frank our game ranger who went out of his way to provide us with some very memorable game drives. Also to Martina our hostess who was so welcoming and friendly and made sure that we never went without anything. The attention to detail she supervised was outstanding from the little stone holding the toilet roll neatly, the little thought for the day and chocolate on our pillows, to the hot chocolate waiting for us as we stepped of the landrover…

Nuala Martyn, Ireland: My hubby and I had a wonderful 3 days and night in Adwala Lodge. We were spoilt rotten, the staff were fantasic. Yuri was the perfect host and we really enjoyed his company. The food was amazing, we had yummy breakfasts, high teas and dinners every day. We were very lucky to have Mark as our Game Ranger, we found him passionate about what he does, so informative and we had some amazing experiences on the drives with him, especially with the lions! I would recommend Idwala especially to couples, when we returned to our room on the last evening, they had champagne in an ice box and petals…

Hopewell Lodge: Hopewell Lodge redefines the meaning of ‘private’ when it comes to private game lodges. It is an exclusive luxury hideaway on a private African game reserve in South Africa’s beautiful Eastern Cape. The luxurious suites nestled along the hillside can host up to eight guests and overlook the wildlife reserve, a reclaimed Eden in a once remote wilderness.

Hopewell Lodge
Hopewell Lodge

It is a 40-minute drive from the Port Elizabeth airport and situated in malaria-free coastal valley bushveld. The lodge is an ideal destination for those seeking privacy, exclusivity, tranquility and adventure. Hopewell only hosts ‘one party’ bookings to ensure that your experience exceeds your expectation of an unforgettable stay by not having to share the reserve or game viewing vehicle with strangers. This allows guests to set their own times for game drives and meals in the boma or lodge, making it that much more personal and private.

Guests enjoy the exclusivity of the 6600 acre reserve where the Eastern Cape natural bush, known as the East Cape Thicket, has been uniquely preserved. The secluded and spacious lodge, which overlooks a panoramic landscape, is open aired and light with thatch insulation against the African summer heat. Fireplaces are strategically positioned throughout the lodge to keep you warm against the winter chill. The interior of the living area is comfortably furnished in a classic safari style combined with a contemporary-feel design. The stylish lounge and dining room leads to a wooden deck with spectacular views of a waterhole and lush valleys in the distance.

The upstairs area hosts an intimate recreation area and the four elegant suites are all equipped with en-suite bathrooms and scenic views of the bush. Hopewell Private Game Reserve is home to an abundance of flora and fauna including, hippo, giraffe, zebra, cheetah, a herd of elephant and a variety of antelope and other indigenous wild species with a balanced eco-system. A visit to Hopewell will leave you relaxed, rejuvenated and ready to book your return visit.

Reviews:

James Wright, South Africa: Spent a night on our way from Jhb to the Garden route. They are conveniently just off the main road. Our room was self catering and slept 4 on single beds in an open bedroom/ living room. The building is old and in need of some Tlc, but was clean and was all we needed. It was freezing cold and the bathroom is a long way from the beds which aren’t very comfortable. If you are on a tight budget and aren’t looking for luxury this could be an ideal base to explore Addo.
Gail Surendorff: We really enjoyed our experience at Sandflats. The hosts were friendly and gave us information on places to visit in the area as well as for the rest of our trip. It is definitely a great place to stay when wanting to visit Addo Elephant Park. Winters cottage is the perfect family place as there is room for the children to get rid of their endless amounts of energy. Thank you Sandflats for making our holiday memorable.
Nicolene Hamman, South Africa: We stayed in Winters Cottage. It was almost to big for our family of five. It is an old house and we don’t see many houses like this anymore. The owners are very friendly.
Henriëtte Loubser, South Africa: Thank you for a wonderful time at Sandflats. The Winter Cottage was perfect for us.We enjoyed ourselves very much!

Long a preferred Sunday lunch destination of Port Elizabethans looking for a day in the country, the Zuurberg Inn is still a staple and much loved accommodation destination.

As a child we used to leave directly from Church for Sunday Buffet Lunch at the Zuurberg Inn, in my late Father’s pride and joy – his white Mercedes S Class. The mere fact that he was prepared to drive on a gravel road up the mountain for Sunday Lunch imprinted on my mind just how precious a place this was. My father never rode on any other gravel road but that one to the Zuurberg Inn.

My childlike mind would survey the vast quantities of food available and say; “One day I will be big and return to try and eat my way through as much food as possible”. Afterwards we would lie on the grass overlooking Addo and soak up the sun before returning to the ‘big city’ of Port Elizabeth.

Winter weekends at the Zuurberg Inn were always special – roaring fires, sherry, rib sticking real food and good times ….
