Quick Addo Fact: Sylvester the lion lives in Addo – The iconic black-maned lions of the Kalahari were introduced to Addo over ten years ago. Quick Addo Fact: Addo Elephant National Park is a diverse wildlife conservation park situated close to Port Elizabeth in South Africa and is one of the country’s 20 national parks. It currently ranks third in size after Kruger National Park and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The original section of the park was founded in 1931, in part due to the efforts of Sydney Skaife, in order to provide a sanctuary for the eleven remaining elephants in the area. The park has proved to be very successful and currently houses more than 600 elephants and a large number of other mammals.

Quick Addo Fact: Spekboom is a superhero. Spekboom is prolific in the main game area of Addo and helps to sustain the Addo Elephant Park’s hearty population of over 600 elephants. The succulent spekboom regenerates quickly so the landscape doesn’t look devastated as it does in Kruger due to destructive elephant feeding. The plant is so good at converting carbon dioxide that ten hectares of spekboom would equal taking 25 cars off the road for a year. There are also places where the precious thicket opens up revealing wide plains of game with pinpricks of zebra in the distance and bigger blobs of eland. 79% of the park is covered in subtropical thicket and it is especially concentrated in the main game area. It may look uniform, but the subtropical thicket contains 112 different vegetation types and is comprised of 1 558 plant species – 322 of these species (20%) are endemic and found nowhere else.

Quick Addo Fact: The original Addo Elephant Park was expanded to include the Woody Cape Nature Reserve that extends from the Sundays River mouth towards Alexandria and a marine reserve, which includes St. Croix Island and Bird Island, both breeding habitat for gannets and penguins, not to mention a large variety of other marine life. Bird Island is home to the world’s largest breeding colony of gannets – about 120,000 birds – and also hosts the second largest breeding colony of African penguins, the largest breeding colony being St. Croix island. These marine assets form part of the plan to expand the 1,640 km² Addo National Elephant Park into the 3,600 km² Greater Addo Elephant National Park. The expansion will mean not only that the park contains five of South Africa’s seven major vegetation zones (biomes), but also that it will be the only park in the world to house Africa’s “Big 7“ (elephant, rhinoceros, lion, buffalo, leopard, whale and great white shark) in their natural habitat.

Quick Addo Fact: Addo is a beautiful biodiversity hotspot – Our entire country can be divided into just nine biomes (a unique ecological unit with a characteristic set of plant, animal species and climate) and Addo stretches over five of these biomes, namely the Thicket, Forest, Succulent Karoo, Fynbos and Nama Karoo, and each biome has its own sets of key species. The big goal for the park is now to consolidate the land it has and create a functional ecological unit that stretches from the Karoo all across the mountains, fynbos, forest into the thicket and down across the coastal dune system. This diversity is key to its success. Conservation Manager John Adendorff says, ‘Addo is one of the most profitable parks. There’s nothing that even comes close for its size. It runs at 98% occupancy and there are very few spikes in the year, so it’s just consistent. It’s fully booked all the time and a very difficult place to get into.’

Quick Addo Fact: Two major environmental issues facing the AENP: extinction and overpopulation, which are interrelated. Since the AENP’s original mission was to reintroduce certain mega-herbivores, like the African elephant and black rhinoceros, primary ecological efforts were made to preserve mammalian species. However, by overlooking the other contributors to this environmental chain, certain plant species have been subjected to overgrazing and trampling, mostly by the elephants of the park. This overgrazing and trampling not only destroys much of the plant life, but also forces it to adapt its physiology to stimuli that are not inherent to its evolutionary progress. Some biologists argue that it is not herbivorization alone that is threatening the flora, but a number of other ecological factors including zoochory and nutrient cycling. Up to 77 species of South African endemic plant species have been listed as “vulnerable to elephant browsing.”

This dune sea, as it’s also known, is the largest and least degraded of its kind in the whole southern hemisphere, stretching over 15 800 hectares, with its widest point being five kilometres from the sea. You can park your car at Woody Cape Backpackers and stroll along for ten minutes on the boardwalk and see the immense dune field from a beautiful viewpoint on the beach. Go and see the dunes when the coral trees are also in flower, from June to October, when they form a red blanket over the tree canopy.

Quick Addo Fact: Spekboom is a superhero. Spekboom is prolific in the main game area of Addo and helps to sustain the Addo Elephant Park’s hearty population of over 600 elephants. The succulent spekboom regenerates quickly so the landscape doesn’t look devastated as it does in Kruger due to destructive elephant feeding. The plant is so good at converting carbon dioxide that ten hectares of spekboom would equal taking 25 cars off the road for a year. There are also places where the precious thicket opens up revealing wide plains of game with pinpricks of zebra in the distance and bigger blobs of eland. 79% of the park is covered in subtropical thicket and it is especially concentrated in the main game area. It may look uniform, but the subtropical thicket contains 112 different vegetation types and is comprised of 1 558 plant species – 322 of these species (20%) are endemic and found nowhere else.
