Sunday, May 3. Grasslands Homestead, Great Fish River Reserve, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The Kent family – who are descendants of the 1820 British Settlers – were instrumental in establishing the Great Fish River Reserve in the 1970s, expressly for the conservation of the elegant antelope, the kudu. The old Grasslands homestead was later renovated as a research and education centre and named after him.

This was a tourist attraction near the Addo Elephant Reserve, although not affiliated with the sanctuary. These elephants roam free on the property most of the time, except when they are rounded up 3-4 times a day to carry foreigners like us around, very similar to trail rides on horses. We were told that as adolescents they were relocated to this park from a refuge in Zimbabwe to alleviate overcrowding. The guides who controlled and steered the elephants were all Zimbabwean, too. Riding one is a crazy experience because they’re so impossibly big, agile, and smart.

After the baby fell into the waterhole, there was a kind of quarrel between the mother and the elephant that has caused the push. It looked almost like an accusation to me, as if the mother was saying "what have you done?"
I had to move my position in order to get a different viewpoint, so that I could see the baby again…

Daher ist dieser "Hauptstoßzahn" ("master tusk") auch etwas kürzer als der andere und hat eine abgerundete Spitze auf Grund der Abnutzung.

Le parc a été largement agrandi depuis ses débuts, pour inclure la Woody Cape Nature Reserve qui s’étend de l’embouchure de la Sundays River jusque Alexandria et une réserve marine, comprenant St. Croix Island et Bird Island, d’importants sancutaires pour des oiseaux et d’autres animaux marins. Bird Island abrite notamment la plus importante colonie du monde de Fous du Cap – environ 120 000 oiseaux – ainsi que la seconde plus importante population de manchots du Cap, la plus importante étant St Croix island. Ce qui permet d’étendre Addo National Elephant Park de 1 640 km2 à un Greater Addo Elephant National Park de 3 600 km2. L’agrandissement signifie non seulement que le parc accueille 5 des 7 grands types de végétation d’Afrique du Sud, mais est aussi le seul parc à accueillir le Big 7, à savoir l’éléphant, le rhinocéros, le lion, le buffle, le léopard, la baleine et le grand requin blanc, dans leur habitat naturel.

No longer safe to cross!! It only went down on Sunday morning about 11am! We were cut off from the farmhouse and without electricity…. the rule of thumb is that if you cannot see the ridges on top at the sides of the bridge protruding above the water, its too deep to attempt to cross.
